The Gauteng Department of Education says the grade 8 pupil, Lindokuhle  Masuku, was apparently kidnapped while waiting for transport to pick him up outside Queens High School in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.

Spokesperson for the department, Steven Mabona, says a ransom of about R5 Million has allegedly been demanded for the safe release of the pupil.

"Anyone who might have witnessed or who knows anything about this incident needs to interact with the police because they are investigating the circumstances to this matter," says Mabona.

Meanwhile in Roodepoort on the West Rand, a 15-year-old girl, Kate Spies, with special needs from Lantern School for pupils with special needs, went missing on Monday.

"Normally the parents would come and pick her up at the school, but on the 24th it didn't happen, but the child cannot be accounted for because the parents are looking for the child," says Mabona.

Police investigations are ongoing in both cases.
