Department proposes 7.3% increase in vehicle licensing fees

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has proposed a 7.3% increase in vehicle licensing fees for the 2019/2020 financial year.
The proposed fee has been published in the government gazette for public comments.
The department’s spokesperson, Melitah Madiba, says Gauteng residents have until April 18 to comment before the proposed amendments are taken to the legislature for a final decision.
The Road Freight Association says it will accept any increase that is below inflation.
"We all don't like increases but one would hope that before they increase any tariff that they would actually sit down and look at their priorities and base the increase on what they need to cover," says spokesperson Gavin Kelly.

He says the increase, however, will be passed on to consumers.
"It's going to have an impact on the cost of goods, whenever there is a price increase on anything that affects transport it eventually affects our pockets when we buy goods. Don't forget there are also fuel increases coming soon so down the line the consumer will be having less disposable income," adds Kelly.
