Former finance minister and state capture accused Des van Rooyen has been appointed to the board of the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller agency.
Gauteng Economic Development MEC Tasneem Motara announced the names of the various board members on Thursday.
Van Rooyen was implicated in the commission of inquiry into state capture through his links to the Gupta family.
He was also accused of attempting to influence a security tender at South African Airways.
Van Rooyen, whose short stint as finance minister earned him the nickname ‘Weekend Special’, has denied any wrongdoing.
Motara also announced board members for the Gauteng Liquor Board and Gauteng Tourism Authority.
The Gauteng Tourism Authority board includes former Bosasa director Papa Leshabane, whose name was also mentioned at the state capture inquiry, as well as former Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang.
The former board members’ term of office came to an end on 30 September.
The department received 460 applications across all three public entities, and only 174 applications were successful.
Motara said women lead all three boards as chairpersons.
“This is indeed in line with our commitment to appoint deserving and qualified women in executive leadership positions. Moreover, we have retained the chairpersons of GEP and GTA”
“We look forward to attracting more young people into our boards. The current 6% of youth and 3% of persons with disability is above the minimum threshold. However, more needs to be done,” said Motara.
