He had initially undergone testosterone replacement therapy after being advised by an endocrinologist that he may not be able to reproduce.

Their relationship cooled and they went on separate holidays in December 2009/January 2010.

On Monday Dewani pleaded not guilty to killing Anni, and other related charges. He claims the couple were hijacked as they were being driven through Gugulethu, Cape Town, in a minibus taxi on Saturday, November 13, 2010, while on their honeymoon. According to him the hijackers forced him out and drove off with Anni. She was found dead in the minibus the following morning.

She ended their relationship in an e-mail on January 14, 2010 and moved from Stockholm, Sweden, to London two months later.

"Around this time, I was advised that my hormone levels had increased, making my chances of fertility better," he said in his plea explanation, which is lawyer Francois van Zyl read to the court.

"Anni and I were both excited and I felt invigorated."

At the end of April, they discussed their future and the relationship became more serious. They met each other's parents.

He said they discussed living arrangements and decided to make their main home in Bristol, where his office was, and have a second home in London for weekends.

They began redesigning both properties to make them suitable for married life and for when they had children.

Dewani said they had a disagreement at the end of May, in which she phoned him in an angry state. He wrote her an e-mail afterwards in which he said he believed they could work through their differences.

According to the plea, he wrote: "I can't believe I am gonna write this, and I actually have tears in my eyes as I write it, but if you really think being with me is not going to make you happy then this is not right for you. I really hope that this is not what you are saying but I don't want to feel like I have forced you into something," Van Zyl read.

The two resolved their disagreement and announced their engagement in May 2010. They planned a wedding and it went ahead in

India on October 29 that year. Earlier, it was revealed that Dewani was bisexual and had sexual interactions with both men and women.

Dewani is charged with murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and conspiracy to commit these crimes. He is also charged with defeating the ends of justice.
