Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla has urged motorists to make use of alternative routes due to Wednesday morning's protests in Diepkloof, Soweto.
The residents of Diepkloof Hostel are demanding electricity, houses, water and sanitation.
Angry community members took to the streets and barricaded roads with burning tires and rocks.
Affected roads include the Chris Hani Road between Collinder Road and the N12 exit.
Fihla has urged motorists to exercise caution and rather make use of alternative routes.
“Traffic on the N1 North N12 East is being diverted at the Golden Highway in Devland and traffic is also being diverted on the N12 West at Xavier in Winchester Hills.
“Motorists are urged to avoid and to use Xavier Street and Rifle Range Road, Golden Highway, Ben Naude Drive, Randshow Road and the Soweto Highway as alternative routes.
“The situation is tense and officers have been deployed to the scene,” said Fihla.
