Digital Covid-19 vaccination certificates to be rolled out this week
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The National Health Department says the digital Covid-19 vaccination certificates will be accessible by the end of the week.
The certificates, which caused an uproar on social media, are currently in the testing phase.
All South Africans who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to download or print the certificate.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced that the country would soon have standardised proof of vaccination to facilitate travel, access to establishments, and other activities.
The health department’s spokesperson Foster Mohale says the system isn’t fully functional just yet.
“The department is currently at the testing phase of the system to troubleshoot all possible glitches ahead of the official launch later this week. Thus, the system is not yet officially functional in a live environment which will enable vaccinated individuals to access and download certificates.
We had to build a lot of security into the system to protect individuals` personal data as much as possible,” says Mohale.
Some individuals have managed to access the certificates on Tuesday during testing.
Mohale says the release of the vaccination certificates will be phased-in over time.
“Thus, we request members of the public to exercise patience while we implement the final refinement as we prepare to officially launch the first version of the COVID-19 vaccination digital certificate.”
