Digital Vibes: DA calls for criminal prosecution of Mkhize, senior officials
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged Health Minister Joe Phaahla to immediately remove all officials implicated in the Digital Vibes tender scandal.
The party briefed the media on Wednesday shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa made public the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report into the health department's irregular awarding of tender to Digital Vibes.
The report indicated that former health minister Zweli Mkhize was directly involved in the signing off of funds.
Some health officials, including acting director-general Anban Pillay, were also implicated.
The DA’s Siviwe Gwarube says the National Prosecuting Authority should pursue criminal investigations and prosecutions against implicated officials.
“The report has confirmed what we have always known, that all those who have been implicated in this corruption scandal must be criminally investigated and prosecuted.
“The SIU report, which was a culmination of an investigation into the awarding of the Digital Vibes contract which was deemed irregular, has proven that many within the Department of Health, including the former minister Mkhize and senior management were involved in the awarding of this contract and are possibly guilty of corruption.”
Gwarube says President Cyril Ramaphosa should also shoulder some of the blame.
“Instead of taking action against Mkhize and Health Department officials when the irregularities were first flagged, the president chose to conceal this report from the public in order to hide away this abhorrent and brazen display of ANC corruption.”
