Dlamini under fire for Manana comments
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
Social development minister Bathabile Dlamini has come under fire for saying there are other senior government leaders who are worse culprits than deputy minister of higher education Mduduzi Manana.
Manana is facing two charges of assault following an incident at Cubana in Fourways.
He appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Thursday, after a video emerged showing him allegedly beating up a woman.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Dlamini said the women's league would not call for Manana's removal from government as the attack was being used as a political tool.
President Jacob Zuma is under mounting pressure to act against Manana but Dlamini, who is also the President of the ANC Women's League (ANCWL), has refused to condemn his actions.
Speaking at an ANCWL rally in Germiston on Sunday, Dlamini said the struggle for women's rights is not about individuals.
"You know once you start doing that (condemning individuals) men are going to close ranks. And therefore, ours is to fight patriachy, fight violence against women and children. And therefore, that is why we are saying to the leaders of the ANC the time has come for them to come clean on these issues."
Dlamini has refused to name the ANC leaders who she believes are guilty of violence against women.
