Do away with masks & open stadiums - Malema
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Hundreds of EFF supporters picketed outside the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture on Thursday, demanding the reopening of stadiums to full capacity.
They were joined by the party's President Julius Malema, Deputy President Floyd Shivambu, Treasurer Omphile Moatwe and the football and spectator associations.
Malema said government cannot continue to blame Covid-19 when the African National Congress held its January 8 celebrations at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo.
He described Minister Nathi Mthethwa as lazy and uninspiring.
"We have been lied to for two years in the name of corona, open our country, do away with masks, open our economy we will take responsibility for our own lives. All of us are encouraged to vaccinate, nobody is going to force anyone to vaccinate. We must vaccinate on our own terms. Even at stadiums we can't prohibit the unvaccinated," said Malema to a cheering crowd.
Malema said the closure of stadiums has taken away people’s income, including hawkers who sell during sporting events, artists who perform and their management and businesses that operate near stadiums which benefit when there are events.
