Drama as Supra Mahumapelo resigns

The office of the North West Premier cancelled a scheduled press conference at the 11th hour following the news that Supra Mahumapelo has resigned.

He was expected to address a press conference at 10:00 on Wednesday morning, where he was expected to elaborate on his decision.


However, a statement was issued early on Wednesday morning, stating that the briefing was postponed indefinitely "due to new developments."


On Tuesday evening, the ANC in the North West confirmed in a statement that his resignation has been accepted. 


"The African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima accepts with a sense apprehension - but great pride - the decision by our Provincial Chairperson, Supra "SOR" Mahumapelo to voluntarily exit from his deployment as Premier," read a statement by the acting provincial secretary, Suzan Dantjie.

The provincial structures said they believed in Mahumapelo's innocence, following demands across the province that he resigned.


Weeks of widespread protests against poor service delivery anc mounting allegations of corruption, led to a visit by senior ANC leaders, demanding that he handed in his resignation.

The embattled leader faces a probe by the Hawks after he reportedly gave a herd of cattle worth R1.5 million to former president Jacob Zuma.


The elite-crime fighting unit also raided his office in March and seized documents relating to an alleged fraudulent multimillion rand tender.
