Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi
says government needs to upskill young people struggling with drug addiction to
ensure they kick the habit for good.
Lesufi spoke during a ministerial crime prevention imbizo in Finetown, south of Johannesburg on Monday
He said 7 000 people have already indicated their willingness to undergo rehabilitation as a means to secure employment.
“The drug issue needs our immediate attention, and the drug issue needs state resources, and we need to attend to it.
“We have already started this work with us addicted to drugs, specially nyaope and crystal meth. Seven thousand young people have already raised their hands and volunteered to be assisted.
“We are taking them as government for free for the next six months to work hard on their medical, physical and rehabilitation needs. More importantly, take care of their skills so that they don’t go back to drugs.”
