Drugs worth over R8mn seized in two days

SARS Customs intercepted 28 kilogrammes of ecstasy and cocaine estimated at over R8 million in two separate incidents at the OR Tambo International Airport in the last 48 hours.

SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela says cocaine was found in a shipment from Sao Paulo via Johannesburg in transit to Windhoek after a detector dog reacted positively yesterday.


"Twelve containers of cream were confirmed to be 15kg of cocaine estimated at R4 315 500," says Memela,


Memela says 13.2 kilogrammes of ecstasy worth R3.96 million was intercepted at the Johannesburg International Mail Centre on Tuesday.

The drugs were on route to Sweden from Malawi.


"The discovery was made when alert customs officials noticed the seals of containers containing cream were damaged. Upon further inspection officials discovered the drugs in 42 containers.  A drug test confirmed the contents to be ecstasy," says Memela.


The goods were handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
