‘Drunk’ Porsche driver to hand himself over for Andre Piehl death

The driver of the car that allegedly hit and killed Famous Brands executive André Piehl while he was cycling is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Andre Piehl

Piehl, a cyclist and SA champion triathlete, was killed by an alleged drunk driver on the R512 near Lanseria on Saturday.

The man is expected to hand himself over to the police ahead of his court appearance.

Piehl, who was riding his bike with fellow cyclist Je’an du Preez on the R512 near Lanseria on Saturday morning, died after he was struck by a Porsche SUV.

Piehl died at the scene while Du Preez was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The suspect was arrested earlier this week, but was later released due to lack of evidence.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM News, Megan Harrington-Johnson, from Harrington Johnson Wands Attorneys – the law firm representing both victims - said more evidence has been secured.

The matter will thus proceed in court.

“By an agreement reached with the suspects' defence attorney and prosecutors, we can confirm that he will be appearing in court at 15h00, in the Randburg Magistrate Court on Monday for the first appearance wherein he will be facing multiple charges,” said Harrington-Johnson.

“We can confirm further that the senior prosecutor himself Yusuf Baba will be overseeing this matter personally.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is obtained for both Andre Piehl, who tragically lost his life, and Je’an Du Preez, who is currently in a stable yet very serious condition in hospital.”
