Drunk presiding officer, political party members storming ballot facility among problems encountered by IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says a substantial number of special votes were cast by midday on Sunday.


The commission received a record number of special vote applications of more than R1,1 million, with between 50% and 70% of the votes done through home visits.


In a statement on Sunday, the IEC said voters who could not cast their votes may still do so at their voting stations on Monday.


Several incidents were reported in three provinces, including Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.


“In Mpumalanga, a presiding officer in was summarily dismissed after he was found to be under the influence of alcohol, also the commission laid charges with the police after a voter tore a ballot paper.


“In KwaZulu-Natal eight voting stations could not open yesterday (Saturday) due to a dispute over traditional leadership. In Limpopo, charges have been laid with the police after political party members stormed a secure storage for special voting ballots papers, causing damage to one ballot box and the facility,” the IEC said in the statement.
