Duo behind bars for defrauding KZN Blind and Deaf Society of R12m

A Durban man and woman accused of defrauding the KZN Blind and Deaf Society of R12 million are to remain in police custody.

They are alleged to have stolen the money from the facility between 2012 and 2018. 


The pair was arrested in Estcourt on Thursday after evading police for some time. 


KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says the two lined up before the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.  


"Ruvanya Ramiah, 30, and Ayush Rambally, 31, appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on charges of fraud, theft, and money laundering to the value of approximately R12 million. 


"It is alleged that they stole this money from the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society while Ramiah was employed there.


"They were remanded into custody till the 28 April 2022 for a formal bail application."
