Nhlanhla Lux hits back at Dudula critics following deadly Soweto clashes

Operation Dudula leader Nhlanhla Lux Dlamini has hit out at critics of the controversial movement.

Members of the movement clashed with residents of an informal settlement in Kliptown, Soweto on Monday following a demonstration over cable theft.

It’s understood one person died during the altercation while another was wounded.

On Wednesday, Dlamini spoke at a community meeting Soweto as tensions continued to simmer.

He hit out at critics that labelled members of the movement as vigilantes after a string of operations aimed at driving out illegal migrants and criminal elements from various communities.

This includes Diepsloot, Alexandra and parts of Soweto.

“These people are not vigilantes, so who briefed our president wrong? Which ministers are going against the young people?

“When we were at Maponya Mall [during the July unrest], the president came to us to say ‘well done’ but today they want to know who gave us the permission to take the law into our own hands.

“We had guns at Maponya Mall but no one asked questions about the guns. Today, we sing and call on government to put South Africans first and we are labelled vigilantes,” a fired up Dlamini said to a cheering crowd.

Dlamini accused Police Minister Bheki Cele of taking sides, adding that it ia politicians who sold out the people of South Africa.

“We won’t be ruled by people from outside because politicians took big cheques to sell this country out.”

The Dudula movement has reignited widespread debate about the country’s porous borders.

It has also sparked fears of xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.
