Durban Club race allegations probed

Allegations that the Durban Club allows whites only in the Vetch Beach in Point Waterfront will be investigated, KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu said on Sunday.

Racial discrimination has no place anywhere in South Africa, Mchunu said.

“The premier was reacting after it emerged that Durban Club allows whites only in the Vetch Beach in Point Waterfront. The premier was taken aback by this alleged tendency; as a result an investigative team led by eThekwini municipality will be set up to investigate and verify if this practice is indeed taking place,” Mchunu’s acting spokesman Sibusiso Magwaza said.

Said Mchunu: “South Africans come a very long way in terms of race relations and the discrimination of the black population in particular. The dawn of democracy in 1994 ushered [in] a new era, when we thought the emphasis of race was behind us.”

Any beach in South Africa was a natural resource that belonged to all the people of the country. The investigation task team had to get to the bottom of this “embarrassing situation and make necessary recommendations and amendments”.

“As leaders of the government in this beautiful province, it is our responsibility to ensure that all citizens enjoy all their rights which are guaranteed in our Constitution,” Mchunu said. – African News Agency
