The torrential downpour has caused severe flooding - resulting in roads being closed.

The storm has knocked down powerlines with several suburbs now without electricity.

Residents have been urged to brace themselves for more heavy rain later on Tuesday.

A number of buildings have also flooded.

The SA Weather Service says strong winds of 70 - 90km/h are expected to rip through Durban.

ECR Newswatch has been speaking to Dominic Mitchell - who was trapped in his car on the N2 heading to Amanzimtoti earlier.

"I was driving along the N2, heading towards Amanzimtoti. Suddenly, there was heavy rain. I drive a big car, so I thought it would be fine. The rain got more and more intense and the wind then came. The wind was basically rocking the car," he says.

Mitchell says motorists got out of their vehicles to try and push their cars to the side of the road.

"I'd say 90% of cars tried to pull up on the side of the road. A whole lot of cars stopped under the bridge - in all three lanes. That blocked the freeway as well."

This storm comes just hours after a severe storm caused chaos in Gauteng.

Some residents even reported being hit by a tornado.

However, the SA Weather Service has been unable to confirm this.

It says a tornado was possible in the weather conditions experienced on Monday.
