An overseas trip started on a sour note for a group of Dutch tourists.

The large group was travelling from the OR Tambo International Airport when they were ambushed and robbed in Fourways.

It is believed a bogus cop and a group of civilians are behind the attack.

Police minister Fikile Mbalula says: "The 36 tourists were traveling on a Megabus when it was allegedly stopped by a SAPS marked vehicle with one man dressed in SAPS uniform and five others in civilian clothing."

One of the tourists was injured and had to be taken to hospital.

Mbalula has condemned the robbery and views it as an attack on the tourism industry and economy.

"The robbery in and around the OR Tambo International Airport is being investigated. Tourism is part of our economic drivers and a provider of jobs for the youth, we must work hard in protecting this industry. Part of this is ensuring that our tourist not only feel safe but are safe in our country. I condemn this robbery in the strongest terms and call for harsh punishment on those responsible," Mbalula says.

A police investigation is currently underway.

The minister is expected to visit the tourists on Tuesday afternoon.

South Africans were quick to react to the news.
