Five people have been confirmed dead following flooding caused by heavy rains in the Eastern Cape province.
The rain-affected mostly informal settlements and homes in low-lying areas in East London.
The Buffalo City Metro has since deployed emergency teams to aid residents.
The provincial government has confirmed that mop-up operations are underway.
Non-Profit Organization, Gift of the Givers has since stepped in to assist.
“In the early hours of Saturday morning, hundreds of families in Mdantsane and Duncan Village awoke to the sound and powerful streams of water flowing through their informal dwellings washing away or substantially displacing hundreds of structures,” says Gift of the Givers in a statement.
A child and a teenager drowned while the mother of the teenager was admitted to hospital with an injury.
Gift of the Givers has moved its Eastern Cape team to East London as of Monday.
