Eastern Cape man arrested for killing wife, kids with axe

Police in Eastern Cape have arrested a man who is believed to have killed his wife and five children with an axe in Kwaaiman.

The man was arrested at Ginsberg in King Williams Town on Thursday night.  

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana says the police received information that the suspect was hiding at a relative’s home.

“A quick action by the multi-disciplinary team of investigators led to the arrest of the suspect on Thursday night in Ginsberg near King Williams Town. According to the reports, the investigators received information which led them to a flat allegedly belonging to a relative in Ginsberg where they found and arrested the 32-year-old male suspect who was in hiding.”

Kinana says they believe the suspect was preparing to flee to his native Zimbabwe.  

“It's alleged that the suspect, who cannot be identified at the stage until his court appearance, had escaped from Dabekweni locality in Kwaaiman after the incident to find refuge in King Williams Town. At the time of the arrest, the suspect is believed to have been preparing to flee South Africa back to his own country.”  

The man will appear in court soon.
