Eastern Cape shows the largest jump in new coronavirus cases

The Eastern Cape has shown the highest increase in new COVID-19 cases over a 24-hour period.

The Ministry of Health released the latest figures in a statement on Friday night.

According to Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, says Africa now has a total of 4 220 cases.

A total of 63 new cases were reported in the Eastern Cape as of the 24th of April, bringing the total in the province to 480

“Today we regrettably report 4 new deaths. This brings the total to 79. We convey our condolences to the families of the deceased and appreciate the health workers who treated the deceased patients. The new deaths are from the following provinces: Western Cape: 2 KZN: 2,” reads the statement.

Mkhize adds in the statement that there was a national increase in cases of 267.

The Western Cape remains the hardest hit province – with 1 413 cases.

The Western Cape has the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in the country. A total of 28 people have died in the Western Cape compared to the 27 in KwaZulu-Natal, while it also has the most confirmed cases. Speaking on the DA's Facebook page on Friday, Zille said the latest statistics are the result of efficient testing.
