Motshekga was speaking at the Nellmapius Secondary School, east of the city, on Monday.

She visited the school to mark the reopening of public schools across the country.

“This government has prioritised education because it knows that it is only through education that we can deal with some of our challenges that are here,” Motshekga told pupils.

“Because an educated man won’t rape akere? Or do they?”

“Yes!” the students replied in disbelief.

“Oh, I thought they needed to be civilised to not do certain things. Now I am disappointed,” replied Motshekga.

Pupils at public schools across the country returned to the classrooms on Monday.

Government delayed the reopening of schools by two weeks due to the second wave of Covid-19 infections.

At the peak of the second wave, the country recorded a whopping 20 000 new cases each day at the end of December and beginning of January.

Since then, the number of new cases has decreased with only 1744 new cases recorded for Sunday.
