Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, expressed her disappointment and shock over allegations of sexual abuse in schools at a media briefing on Sunday.

Motshekga reiterated her call to parents to teach children about their rights.

"It's to teach children about their rights, their bodies and just give them the confidence to speak out. Also to work with parents so that they can help to see if there are signs that are suspicious and are able to report. Girls feel ashamed that somebody made a sexual remark, they feel guilty and don't speak about and that is how they get it to continue."

The principal has since been reported to the South African Council of Educators (SACE) and could be struck off the roll of educators.
