EFF names candidate for Joburg mayor
The chair of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Johannesburg Musi Novela has been nominated as the party's preferred candidate to succeed outgoing mayor Herman Mashaba.
Novela has been the leader of the party’s Johannesburg caucus since its inception in 2013.
"The nomination follows the EFF decision that our governance experience and understanding of the inner workings of government at all levels, and our correct manifesto priorities place the EFF as the most suitable organisation to lead the City of Johannesburg," the EFF said in a statement on Tuesday.
The EFF and the Democratic Alliance (DA) have confirmed their preferred candidates for the Joburg mayoral position, with the DA nominating the city’s MMC for Finance Funzela Ngobeni.
Although the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg has not confirmed any names for the position, it's expected that chairperson Geoff Makhubo will be the preferred candidate when the council votes for a new mayor on Thursday.
