Opposition parties have welcomed the Constitutional Court judgement on the secret ballot.

The court ruled Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete has the powers to allow a secret ballot during a motion of confidence against President Jacob Zuma.

The United Democratic Front (UDM) took the matter to court, to allow ANC MPs to vote without fear of intimidation.

Speaking outside ConCourt, the EFF's Leigh-Ann Mathys says when Mbete declares the date for the motion of no confidence opposition parties will stand together.

"When the Speaker declares the day for the motion of no confidence, you can be assured opposition parties are going to stand together. We are going to shut down South Africa and we are giving SA voters the opportunity to be a part of this. You complain on social media, this is your opportunity to shut down the country. You must tell your ANC MPs how they must vote, so they can stand on the right side of history," says Mathys.

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa says the judgement shows Mbete was biased.

"She put the interests of her political party ahead of parliament. This judgement also means the threats issued by Zuma and on MPS have fallen flat. ANC MPs are now free to vote and follow their conscience. We are still saying, you cannot have a questionable character and vote that person to the highest office," Holomisa says.

The DA's James Selfe says the judgement is a victory for South Africans.

"We are delighted by the court judgement and we believe this was a victory for not only the opposition but the people of South Africa, who now through their elected representatives have the opportunity to remove a toxic president. We will now write to the Speaker and have the motion of no confidence scheduled as soon as possible," Selfe says.
