City Power says power supply to the southern suburb in Johannesburg could be restored by this evening.

Several areas, including Kibler Park, Naturena and the Johannesburg Prison were left without power when the Eikenhof substation caught fire on Monday.

Joburg Water was also forced to switch off three reservoirs on Tuesday morning since Johannesburg Water and Rand Water get their electricity - to pump water to certain areas - from Eikenhof.

A new transformer is currently being assembled by City Power technicians.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says they hope that power to residential areas will be fully restored this evening.

“Another new transformer is being brought in and is currently being assembled by the team and we should be able to test it around midday. We estimate the repairs to the residential lines to be done by at least 7 this evening,” he says.

Other suburbs are expected to have power thereafter.

City Power also estimates that water will be fully restored by Wednesday morning.

“Because the Rand Water Board transformer was raised to the ground in that fire and requires a new transformer, it is going to take a little while to restore power to that line. We estimate work will be done on it by midnight and tests should be done after that, and we should be a belt to have a fully restored operation at least by tomorrow morning on Rand Water,” says Mangena.
