Ekurhuleni taxi associations strike peace deal
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Greater Germiston Taxi Association and the Zonkizizwe Taxi Association have signed an agreement to end the ongoing violence in the area.
This follows months of sporadic acts of violence between taxi drivers over route allocation in the Germiston and Zonkizizwe area.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport said on Wednesday that it managed to strike a deal between the two associations which would see the associations share routes equally.
Spokesperson Theo Nkonki says a monitoring committee will also be deployed.

“This is a great breakthrough for the people of Germiston and Zonkizizwe because also in the agreement they have committed to halting all violent clashes, meaning now we are looking at a situation where they will be working together.
“The monitoring team that they should set up jointly, to meet regularly so they oversee the agreement and make sure it is done accordingly.”
National taxi associations will be called to intervene if violence does not subside.
“Should there be any problems then that team will meet and sit around a table, talk about the problems and resolve the problems. If they can’t then they will ask for the assistance of the Gauteng taxi industry.”
