Elderly arrested for illegal march in Vuwani to appear in court
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Six elderly people arrested in connection with an illegal march in Vuwani are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
They staged the march in the Limpopo village on Monday.
"They also attempted to assault police officers with a knobkerrie and pelted the officers with stones," Limpopo police spokesperson Ronél Otto said.
Vuwani residents are set against a decision by the Municipal Demarcation Board to include them into a new municipality.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, the board's Ashraf Adam said the Vuwani matter is at the Constitutional Court.
He confirms they've handed in court documents and will at this stage not comment on the matter further.
Nearly 30 schools were torched and vandalised during violent protests in the area in May.
Schooling has still not fully resumed at affected schools.
The education department brought in mobile classrooms, but teachers and pupils have stayed away from school out of fear of intimidation.
