The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) is set to meet and discuss Eskom's application for a proposal for a 32% tariff hike.

The power utility applied for the increase in September, and will kick in during the 2023/2024 financial year.

Energy expert Ted Blom says a commission of inquiry must be established into the power utility’s spending habits.

“Eskom has had over 700% tariff increases over the last 12 years and it has been negatively affecting the economy. It doesn’t make sense why  the executives do not cut their own belt and trim their own expenses to stay within the inflation rate.”

“I think it’s time that there is a commission of enquiry into Eskom tariff increases because it’s clear that there is corruption, they are using public tariff increases to fund corruption.

“The constitution is very clear, there is no way that Eskom can justify anything higher than CPI or inflation increase.”
