The power utility says the system is constrained due to the cold front and the breakdown of a number of generation units.

This is the second consecutive week the power utility has had to resort to load shedding due to a constrained system.

Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the return of six units have been offset by the breakdown of four others.

“As the aged generation infrastructure is unreliable and volatile, this constrained power system is expected to persist for the rest of the week, particularly as the cold front hits.

“Unplanned breakdowns stand at more than 11 900 MW of capacity, adding to the 4 350MW currently out on planned maintenance.”
