Eskom, labour unions deadlock in wage negotiations
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Eskom is expected to meet with labour unions on Thursday after wage negotiations reached a deadlock on Wednesday evening.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are demanding a 15% increase in wages, while Solidarity wants 9.5% increases for its members.
The power utility's spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says trade unions rejected Eskom's 1.5% adjustment in basic salary.
"Eskom proposed a 1.5% adjustment in basic salary, provided the unions agree to Eskom's proposals to review employee benefits and agree to the Eskom response in terms of union demands.
"Eskom reiterated its offer and the associated conditions and recorded that this if the final offer.
Organised labour rejected this offer and urged Eskom to reconsider its position," says Mantshantsha.
The state-owned power utility and unions are expected to meet today.
