Eskom leadership under pressure as blackouts continue
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Energy expert Tshepo Kgadima says leadership changes need to be made at Eskom.
His remarks come amid reports of imminent changes to the board and leadership at the crisis-stricken power utility.
The Sunday Times reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa and his cabinet will meet this week to discuss the changes.
South Africa has experienced some of the worst load shedding to date as Eskom struggles to produce enough electricity.
Kgadima says the Eskom board has failed dismally.
"The problems that Eskom is facing are at a management level. The board that is currently there has failed dismally in terms of its fiduciary duty... and in terms of the strategic direction that Eskom is supposed to follow.
"Unless and until Andre de Ruyter as a CEO and Jan Oberholzer as COO are fired, then there will be an expectation that such changes may be not be effective or even bring in any meaningful impact to Eskom and bring to an end the rolling blackouts that are currently experiencing as a country."
Kgadima says the role of the board is to lead the utility and not manage it on a daily basis.
