Eskom, load shedding named 'newsmaker of the year'
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The National Press Club has named Eskom and load shedding as newsmaker of the year 2022.
This annual award represents the dominant themes of the annual news cycle.
"Following the escalation of load shedding into blackouts, at some point even up to stage6, leadership instability at Eskom, reports of sabotage within Eskom, deployment of the military force at some of the Eskom plants, amidst escalating costs of maintaining Eskom’s energy generation, it came as no surprise that Eskom and load shedding would be named as the Newsmaker for 2022," says Club chairperson, Antoinette Slabbert.
All eyes are on President Cyril Ramaphosa as the country continues to battle the rolling blackouts – with stage 4 currently in place until further notice.
Slabber notes Ramaphosa was the leader of government business which includes Eskom, during the ‘nine wasted years’ "and continues to oversee the administration under which Eskom falls, this time around as the sitting President of the country.”
