Eskom must not blame workers for Medupi explosion, says Numsa
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has urged Eskom not to rush to blame workers for the explosion at the recently completed Medupi power station in Limpopo.
Unit 4 exploded at the plant earlier this week.
Eskom has since issued provisional suspension notices to some employees.
Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says some of their members have been placed on precautionary suspension.
“We would like to caution the management of Eskom not to rush to make pronouncements in the media and claim that workers are to blame for this incident. There is still an investigation which has to take place and no findings have yet been made. Therefore, it is wrong for Eskom management to rush and make pronouncements because it seems they are pre-empting the outcome of the investigation.
“If they want us to believe that the process is fair and that they have not interfered in the outcome of the investigation process, then they should stop speculating in the media. We have also informed Eskom that in terms of the process we expect that unions will be represented and form part of the investigation process.”
