Eskom power station performance an ‘Achilles’ heel’ - Public Enterprises
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Department of Public Enterprises has likened Eskom’s power woes to an “Achilles’ heel” when it comes to performance.
On Wednesday, the Department appeared before the portfolio committee in Parliament to answer questions on some of the country’s most troubled State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
“The performance at our power stations continues to be the Achilles heel of Eskom. We have the explosion that has not helped,” says Director General (DG) Kgathatso Tlhakudi.
Tlhakudi’s comments come after unit four of Medupi’s power station went up in flames last week Sunday.

Eight senior members were subsequently suspended as a result of the explosion.
While the cause of the explosion is still not yet known, the costs are expected to run into billions.
“Let’s give the engineers as well as the department of labour time to do their work. Unfortunately, we can’t put time frames on this as you open up and investigate, there are various tests that you have to do and so on,” adds Tlhakudi.
