Eskom ramps up load shedding to stage 3
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Eskom has moved load shedding to stage 3 from 2pm on Friday.
The embattled power utility says stage 3 will continue throughout the weekend until 5 am on Monday.
The power cuts will then be reduced to stage 2.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the decision to ramp up load shedding was due to a loss in additional five generating units this morning.
"The additional load shedding tonight is required to manage and recover the emergency generation reserves which have been utilised extensively over the past five days," says Mantshantsha.
Mantshantsha says three generating units at Tutuka, and two at Kusile tripped.
"The delay in the return to service of Koeberg Unit 2 has exacerbated the capacity shortages. During this weekend, critical planned maintenance at Hydro de Cahorra Bassa in Mozambique, Lethabo, Majuba, Matimba and Camden power stations will be carried out in preparation for the week ahead.”
