Eskom suspends load shedding for the weekend
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Eskom says it will suspend load shedding from Friday at midnight.
It has been implementing stage 1 power cuts.
The embattled power utility has continued to implement varying stages of load shedding throughout the month of September and the first two weeks of October, blaming it on a shortage of generation capacity and breakdowns at power stations.
The power utility implemented stage 2 power cuts on Wednesday and Thursday, which was later reduced to stage 1 on Friday.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the utility will suspend load shedding at midnight due to lower weekend demand.
"Since Wednesday evening a generation unit each at Arnot and Majuba power stations were returned to service while a generating unit each at Duvha, Hendrina, Lethabo and Tutuka power stations were taken offline for repairs.
We currently have 5 254MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 190MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns," says Mantshantsha.
Mantshantsha says Eskom will give another update on the power changes on Sunday afternoon, or when there have been significant changes to the grid.
