Eskom, unions reach wage agreement - Gordhan
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan says a wage agreement has been reached with striking unions at Eskom.
Gordhan briefed the media on Tuesday, shortly after Eskom ramped up power cuts to stage 6.
Eskom has blamed the striking workers for the blackouts.
Gordhan said Eskom met with the National Union of Mineworkers and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa to discuss the impasse.
He said the unions agreed to return to work.
“As a result of extensive negotiations between some of the unions and the management team at Eskom earlier today, an agreement was reached on the wage settlement that both parties will commit themselves to in due course.
"An agreement was also reached that these unions who have been primarily involved in some of the activities that I am referring to will request their workers to return to work tomorrow.
"And so the recovery of Eskom plants and various things that has to be done to get the operation going will start on that basis."
At the same time NUM and NUMSA released a joint statement calling on workers to normalise the situation at Eskom.
“In light of these developments, we call on workers at Eskom to normalise the situation given that Eskom has returned to the negotiating table.
"We are calling on our members to give this process and the CBF meeting on Friday the necessary chance to settle the current dispute."
