Eskom warns of looming power cuts amid wet weather

Eskom has warned of possible power cuts amid a severely constrained power grid.
The warning follows the breakdown of four generation units as well as a delay in returning to service two other units at Tutuka and Matla power stations.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the heavy rainfall in parts of the country has only served to compound the power utility’s woes.
“We currently have 4 984MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 514MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned breakdowns.
“Eskom is working hard to return as many of these generation units to service as possible,” says Mantshantsha.
He adds the power supplier is currently relying on emergency reserves to meet the country’s increased demand.
“However, should the situation deteriorate further, load shedding may need to be implemented at short notice, as a last resort, in order to protect the national grid.”
It’s understood the constrained supply may persist throughout the week.
