Eskom: We will not restore power where illegal connections, tampering rife

Cash-strapped power utility Eskom has taken a decision to not restore power to areas in Gauteng where illegal connections are the order of the day.
Eskom has taken the decision to not restore power supply to areas in Gauteng which has been crippled by illegal connections, meter tapering and bypassing.
The struggling power utility says it will only restore supply to legal and paying customers.
Eskom spokesperson Dikatso Mothae says their decision follows a spate of attacks on technicians - making power restoration a wasteful exercise.

Areas such as Diepsloot and Soweto have been fingered.
“It has become quite dangerous for our technicians to go in because the community do not want to allow them to do these audits. So, we are saying allow us safe access so that we can audits otherwise it becomes wasteful expenditure to continuously to replace the transformers.”
