Soweto’s Eskom debt on the rise

Debt owed to Eskom by Soweto residents now sits at a whopping R18 billion.
This is according to spokesperson Dikatso Mothae, who adds that the debt has increased by R3 billion since last year.

"At the moment we are sitting R18 billion of debt owed to us by Soweto residents. This has gone up from R15 billion last year, but this is inclusive of interest," she says.
During the state of the nation address last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised that individual users and municipalities should pay for the electricity that they consume.

However, Eskom says they are in continuous discussions with customers to try and recover the money owed to Eskom.
