Estina Project suspects granted bail

The eight suspects arrested in connection with the Estina Dairy probe appeared at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Free State, Phaladi Shuping, says all the accused, except one, were granted bail.


Kamal Vasram's case has been postponed due to the state not being able to verify his place of residence.


Peter Thabethe, Sylvia Dlamini and Tankisi Masiteng were granted bail of R10 000 each while Varun Gupta, Nazeem Howa, Ronica Ragavan and Ashu Chawla were granted R200 000 bail each.

Their case has been postponed to 17 August and their bail conditions include the removal of their passports and regularly reporting to their local police stations.


Meanwhile, the Hawks has confirmed Ajay Gupta has been declared a fugutive and a manhunt has been launched to find him.


He is being sought in relation to a separate investigation. 


Ajay Gupta's lawyers were informed that he is now regarded as a fugitive since they failed to hand him over.


It is understood that he has personal protectors and they are being warned to either hand him over or they "might face charges of directly aiding and abetting the fugitive".
