Evidence shows rotational learning doesn’t work- Makhura

While most learners started the new academic year on Wednesday, some children will remain at home while they wait their turn to attend classes.
This is due to rotational learning which was introduced to manage numbers in classrooms so that schools can comply with the one metre Covid-19 social distancing measure.
Many schools across the country are struggling to adhere to that requirement.
“There is great evidence coming that the rotational system is really not working. Some learners are at school others are at home and they come on other days is a major disruption and has a huge impact on the long-term development of our children,” said Makhura at Setlabotjha Primary School in Sebokeng on Wednesday.
Last year, some schools were requesting assistance from churches to allow them more space for teaching on the premises.
Makhura said the system also has implications for mental health.
“We are deeply concerned that if we don’t get to some normalcy with regards to bringing back all learners who are at home there will be long-term consequences. Schools lose teaching time and there is also mental distress.”
