Explainer: Misuzulu ‘entering the kraal' at coronation
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Kathula Twala says the ceremony where King Misuzulu enters the kraal is a unique cultural aspect.
The ceremony is part of the build-up to the coronation.
Prince Misuzulu kaZwelithini Zulu, 47, is set to succeed his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, after his death in March last year after 50 years in charge.
On Saturday, Misuzulu will enter the "cattle kraal" at the Zulu royal residence KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace.
Thwala says the entering of the kraal ceremony speaks to the ancestors and notifies them that someone will be crowned as king in front of everyone.
Thwala says the ban the movement of cattle by Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza will have no impact on the ceremony as the herds of cattle had been already there before the announcement.
People should understand the feuds over succession, and who will be crowned king, are not determined by people but by culture, says Thwala.
Thwala says that the ceremony is symbolic of the filling of a vacuum in the leadership of the Zulu nation, and points to a new dawn for the Zulu Kingdom.
