Extradition treaty between SA, UAE to come effect into effect in July
The extradition treaty between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Africa will come into effect on 10 July.
Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola made the announcement on Friday morning.
Lamola briefed the media on the ratification of the treaties around extradition and mutual legal assistance between the two countries.
"In essence, the ratification by the UAE concludes a ten-year process," said the minister.
This could see the controversial Gupta brothers extradited from Dubai to face criminal charges in South Africa around the allegations of state capture.
"We do expect cooperation going forward because it is a commitment we received from the ambassador [of the UAE] yesterday when we exchanged the instruments,” said Lamola.
"The ambassador committed that he is going to engage with his country and counterparts to cooperate with all our requests.”
Lamola told the media that a timeframe cannot be given as to when the Guptas would be extradited to South Africa.
