The warning follows the recent withdrawal of private security patrols due to financial constraints.

The Numbi Gate, one of the main entrances to the Kruger National Park, has long been a hotspot for armed robberies and violent incidents targeting tourists.

Hi Tech White River Security officially ceased operations on Tuesday, citing a lack of funding.

SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakhuli confirmed the withdrawal and said the park has since stepped up its patrol efforts to fill the security gap.

"We are informed, like everyone else, that they were pulling out due to issues of financial constraints in sustaining the whole security issue around Numbi Gate. We have been utilising our rangers and law enforcement colleagues to assist in patrols, and that will continue.”

With the school holidays already underway, SANParks has urged visitors to avoid using the road after dark and to take additional safety precautions.

"We encourage our customers to travel during the day, not at night. There is also visible policing by the South African Police Service to assist with patrolling while we try to find a solution to restore private security services in the area," said Thakhuli.

Beyond deploying rangers and relying on SAPS, Thakhuli said SANParks is engaging with local communities to build long-term resilience in the area.

This includes working closely with traditional leadership, hosting awareness campaigns, and encouraging residents to report suspicious activity.

"We are part of these communities. We have very good relationships with traditional leaders, schools, churches, and local businesses," Thakhuli said.

"Apart from security, we are involved in socio-economic programmes that benefit communities surrounding the park."

He added that SANParks hopes to resume a formal security presence on the Numbi Road soon, especially as visitor numbers increase during peak holiday periods.
