Fire leaves 250 homeless at Plastic View settlement
Updated | By Martine van der Walt Ehlers
Forty-five structures were destroyed by a fire at the Plastic View informal settlement on the outskirts of Moreleta Park, east of Pretoria.
Tshwane emergency services said the fire broke out the early hours of Saturday morning.
"One patient was treated and transported to hospital for smoke inhalation and moderate injuries and three were treated for minor injuries on the scene but refused transport to a medical facility," said spokesperson Charles Mabaso.
"Two-hundred-and-fifty people lost shelter and personal belongings because of the fire.
Mabaso called on residents to use paraffin stoves with extreme caution, and not to overload electrical plugs with appliances.
"Illegal connections of electricity are a fire and life hazard which residents should always be aware that it might lead to emergency incidents," he said.
"Tshwane Emergency Services Department Disaster Management, together with the city’s Community and Social Development Department are coordinating relief efforts for the affected."
