First quarter sees slight drop in unemployment rate

The jobless rate fell to 34.5%, from 35.3% in the final three months of 2021, Stats SA said on Tuesday.
Statistician-general Risenga Maluleke released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2022 on Tuesday morning.
Maluleke said the labour market gained 370 000 workers between the fourth quarter of 2021 of the first quarter of 2022.
“The biggest job gains were recorded in community and social services (281 000), manufacturing (263 000) and trade (98 000). However, there were job losses in private households (186 000), finance (72 000), construction (60 000) and agriculture (23 000),” he explained.
The expanded definition of unemployment, which includes those who have given up on looking for a job, declined by 0.7% to 45,5%.
The number of Not Economically Active persons decreased by 166 000 in Q1:2022 compared to Q4:2021.
