Five arrested for taxi violence in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police have arrested five suspects in connection with two separate incidents of taxi violence in the province.

In Durban, a 60-year-old taxi driver was shot and injured at a taxi rank on Leopold Street on Wednesday.

 

"Two armed gunmen fired multiple shots at him and fled," says provincial police spokesperson, Jay Naicker.

 

"He was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival."

 

Two bystanders also sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

 

"Upon their arrival at the scene, police officers spotted two men fitting the description of the alleged shooters and gave suspects," says Naicker. 

 

"The men, aged 28 and 31, were promptly arrested with two pistols in their possession."

 

The suspects have been charged with murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms.

On the same day, a 40-year-old taxi owner was shot and injured in Newcastle.

 

"The man was on Iscor Road when five unknown men opened fire at his vehicle and drove off," says Naicker.

 

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

 

Police managed to apprehend three suspects shortly after the shooting, seizing a firearm as well as the getaway vehicle.

 

The arrested suspects have been charged for attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm, Naicker said.

 

They will appear in the Newcastle Magistrates Court soon.
